Harmonia (Harmony) is depicted as a modern Artemis, with drawn bow and arrow representing focused discipline and purposeful action. Her laurel crown represents mastery, her belt diamonds represent womanhood and the feathers represent both South Dakota’s game birds and the sacred nature of fertility in Greek tradition.
The scene features carefully selected wildlife: Canada geese, pronghorn antelope, mule deer antlers and ring-necked pheasants, so South Dakota can be considered a top hunting destination. A hunting dog with a laurel collar represents direction and obedience. The rising crescent moon against cloudy skies represents healing and light in darkness.
