The 5 Goldback Sophia is Wisdom’s first appearance in the Goldback series, with 5/1000th oz of 24K gold. This design combines Nevada’s intellectual and industrial achievements with classical depictions of wisdom.

Sophia (Wisdom) is depicted as Athena, complete with traditional battle gear - raised helm, arm guards and breastplate. She holds a shield and spear, with an owl-adorned gorget - wisdom’s ancient symbol. A miner’s pick axe in her hand represents Nevada’s mining heritage. She stands on an open book supported by a pillar with Nevada’s motto “All for Our Country.”

The design includes many state symbols: UNLV and UNR buildings, the state seal’s quartz mill, a historic Hoover Dam hard hat, the State’s No. 40 Locomotive. The 15th Amendment scroll is a special highlight, as Nevada was a leader in voting rights regardless of race. The state’s natural heritage is represented by the Mountain Bluebird and White Pine, state symbols and White Pine County’s rural character.
